Dave Watts Although there are some open slopes high up, and the prominent high point of Hohe Salve is noticeably bare, most of the slopes are heavily wooded. The piste map is better than it was, using arrows to show which way runs go where that is in doubt.
We stick to the view that it is hopelessly over ambitious in trying to show the whole area in a single map; the result is simply inadequate for route finding. Signposting is also confusing; it helps once you realise that the signs point out the direction to the next lift you want and use the number of the lift to indicate the colour of the run.
In good snow there are long red runs to be done to the valley, but most of the skiing is on the upper slopes where most runs are very short often less than m vertical. These include an eight-seat gondola to the high point of Hohe Salve. Rigi can also be reached by chairs and runs without going to Hohe Salve — to which it is itself linked by chairs. Rigi is also the start of runs down to Itter and Hopfgarten.
Fast lifts Still some slow chairs Lifts from the valley are mainly gondolas, and there are now quite a few fast chairs on the upper slopes. But there are still some slow chairs; t-bars can generally be avoided. Snow reliability Erratic — but has artificial help We have experienced great fresh powder here, but with a low average height, and important links that get a lot of sun, the snow in the SkiWelt can suffer badly in warm weather even in good seasons.
So the snowmaking that has been installed is essential. Grooming is impressive. The black run alongside the Brixen gondola also deserves respect, especially if the snow is in poor condition because of its south-facing aspect. Those runs apart, the main challenges are gentle off-piste routes — from Brandstadl down to Scheffau, for example. It is a big area, and you really get a feeling of travelling around.
There are lots of blue runs and many of the reds could be blue. For beginners Not ideal The big area of nursery slopes between the main road and the gondola station is fine when snow is good — gentle, spacious, uncrowded and free from good skiers whizzing past.
But it can get icy or slushy. None of the lifts is free, but points cards are available. And it has its own terrain park. There is a total of km in the SkiWelt area. Lack of snow-cover can be a problem. Chris now produces Where to Ski guides to individual countries.
